School Council

Welcome to Old Scona Academic! My name is Guru Shimoga and I am the chair of the School Council this year. I look forward to connecting with other parents at the school council meetings.

School councils are collective associations of parents, teachers, students, principal and staff who work together to effectively support and enhance student learning. They provide one means for members of the school community to provide advice and consult with the principal and to advise the board.

What initiatives are the Edmonton Public School District planning this year? What challenges are the OSA teaching staff facing this year? What school events and activities need volunteers? What happens at school dances? What are some of the problems arising from the historical designation of the school building? These are some of the questions that may be raised at the school council meetings. Our meetings are attended by the principal, Dr. Yaniw, acting vice principal, Mrs. Mah, student council representative and at least one teacher. Because of this school representation, we have a casual open forum to ask questions and get answers.

A parent school council at this level is no longer about bake sales and continuous volunteer hours. We assist in decisions about the school as a facility, the technology within the school and in supporting the objectives of the teachers and staff.

To support the school we raise funds at a casino every 18 months. In lieu of other fundraising, we collect $15.00 per student at the beginning of the year (optional). Donations can be made at any time.

Please join us to learn more about Old Scona Academic. Meetings are held at 7:00 PM in the school library on the second Thursday of every month. Refreshments are served.

See you there! If you need more information on the council or its activities, please contact me or the school administration.
